I found this locket on Etsy today, and I feel like I need it:

Yes, that is a labrador! And, just as cool (assuming you even think the labrador on the locket is cool), is that this necklace is made from vintage materials! In fact, all the jewelry in the silk purse, sow’s ear Etsy shop is made from “vintage and re-vamped” items.
Several of the pieces in the shop include animals. For example, if you love French Poodles, how about this kitschy vintage French Poodle locket:

Okay, so that piece may be a little over-the-top kitschy, but I think it is pretty darn cool – and talk about unique. Conversation piece? Perhaps. Man-repeller? Most definitely.
In fact, your search for “dog jewelry” on Etsy will return everything from dog tags (for your dog), to jewelry for your dog, to jewelry for you with dogs on it (some good, some bad, some scary).
So what do you think of the labrador locket? Good, bad, scary, somewhere in between?

I have been noticeably absent from the blog lately, so instead of prolonging the silence I wanted to report that I will be taking somewhat of a blog staycation. I will still post, but with less frequency than previously and my posts will be smaller (quick little snippets of design, pet, products I love, etc…). So things may look and feel a little different!

I created the following piece for my current class, Design and Typography. This class has been pure bliss for me, since I love typefaces. Learning about the structure and anatomy of type, as well as the proper typographic way to work with typefaces has been great; I have been eating it up! For this assignment, we were required to illustrate a saying or maxim using text (no graphics or shapes were allowed). So below is my typographic illustration of “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”; an adage I do not believe, mind you (I teach my 8-year old chocolate girl new tricks all the time!). Of course, my Mocha was the inspiration for this project to being with, as with so much creative pieces that I do.

Note: the ball is made of text, although the jpg does not allow you to see this very well. Below is an alternate version that I created so that it would be obvious that the ball was made out of text. I do not like the second version near as much as the above, original version, though.

Today I added three more framed portraits to my little show at Durango Bagel. Now I feel like the wall is nicely filled out! If you are Durango-local, please don’t forget to stop by and see my work (it’s a good excuse to take a lunch break and grab a bagel, too).

I was switching the month on my little Going Places 2 desk calendar, and just especially liked April’s quote (even if they forgot the “t” on Roosevelt).
What a statement and a way to make the best and stay positive. I like it.
Do you have anything especially exciting or fun going on this month?
My John is going to China, so my Mocha and I will be doing a little traveling to Denver, then Phoenix, and then Denver again. And, we’ll also enjoy a little girl time at home in Durango.
Going Places 2 has an assortment of “inspirational dog prints” and other products; I have their 2011 desk calendar, which unfortunately I do not see in their Etsy shop. The artwork above is (c) 2010 Ginger Oliphant.

I have been working for quite some time on developing a NEW MOCHIE-ROO portrait product … after a couple of months of toying with it and tweaking it, I am so very thrilled to announce a new addition – DIGITAL PET PORTRAITS! From a photo, I will create a digital pet portrait. Go to my Etsy shop to order one of these new portraits!

More Information About These Portraits
These pet portraits have a half-tone, dot pattern which is somewhat subtle and has been described as being similar to half-tone printing, comic books illustrations, and pop art. I am offering these portraits in 4×6″ and 5×7″ sized. These portraits also have the portrait subject’s name in a decorative font; and are professionally printed on Hahnemuhle 100% cotton, acid free, photo rag, 308 gsm fine art paper; a fine art paper of the highest quality.
I have these portraits priced at what I hope to be a very affordable price-point: $22 for a 4×6″ (plus $3 postage) and $28 for a 5×7″ (plus $3 postage).

Here is an close-up example of the half-tone pattern:

For the pet’s name, which can be featured on the portrait like in the examples above, several font and color options are available:

Head over to my Etsy shop and purchase on of these portraits now!
And, as always, I would love to hear from you; any feedback on what you think about this new portrait style is appreciated … feel free to drop me a line!
Oh, and don’t forget to share the love … hit the “like” button at the top of this post!
